Application: Creation of implements for hunting and clothes making.


Hold a stone or piece of obsidian in one hand which is protected by a thick layer, such as leather. With the other hand, a sharp object is used to force small lunate or linear pieces from the large stone. This is done repeatedly until a useable tool is formed.


Arrowheads, spearheads, and cutting tools such as scrapers and knives were made in this manner. Using pressure instead of simple percussion in creating tools also allowed for greater precision and therefore sharper tools.
